Demographics

In Japan, manga is sorted first by the magazine's target reader, not by story type. These five labels tell you who a series was published for.

  • Shonen少年

Manga published for teenage boys: action, rivalry, training arcs and friendship. The best-selling demographic worldwide.

  • Shojo少女

Manga published for teenage girls, centered on emotion, relationships and inner life, with expressive, decorative art.

  • Seinen青年

Manga for adult men. More realistic art, slower pacing, and room for moral ambiguity, politics and psychological drama.

  • Josei女性

Manga for adult women: grounded romance, work, friendship and the compromises of grown-up life.

  • Kodomo子供

Manga for young children. Simple art, clear humor, short chapters and gentle lessons, often tied to anime and toys.

ジャンル

Genres

Genres describe what a story is about. They cut across demographics: a shonen and a seinen series can both be isekai.

  • Isekai異世界

A protagonist is transported or reborn into another world, often a fantasy realm with game-like rules.

  • Mechaメカ

Stories built around giant robots and powered suits, ranging from war epics to coming-of-age dramas.

  • Magical girl魔法少女

Ordinary girls gain transformations and powers, balancing everyday life with fighting threats as a team.

  • Slice of life日常

Low-stakes stories about daily routines, small moments and quiet relationships.

  • Supernatural怪異

Spirits, curses, yokai and the uncanny intruding on the ordinary world.

  • Cyberpunkサイバーパンク

High tech, low life: megacities, cybernetic bodies and questions about identity and control.

  • Yuri百合

Stories centered on romantic or deeply emotional relationships between women.

  • BL (Boys' Love)ボーイズラブ

Romance between male characters, a genre created largely by and for women readers.

  • Shounen-ai少年愛

The soft, non-explicit end of BL in fan usage, and the name of the 1970s shojo movement that founded the genre.

  • Shoujo-ai百合

A Western fan term for tender, non-explicit romance between girls; in Japan the whole genre is simply yuri.

  • Harem & reverse haremハーレム

One lead, several love interests. Usually romantic comedy; the reverse harem flips it for a heroine and many suitors.

  • Iyashikei癒し系

"Healing" manga: calm, low-conflict stories with gentle pacing and beautiful settings, made to help readers unwind.

デレ

Character archetypes

The "dere" types name how a character hides or shows affection. They are archetypes, not genres: any story can have a tsundere.

  • Dere types

All the dere archetypes side by side, from tsundere to himedere, with a comparison table and examples.

  • Tsundereツンデレ

Prickly, then sweet: hostile toward the person they like, affectionate once the guard drops.

  • Yandereヤンデレ

Sweet, then dangerous: devotion that turns obsessive or violent. Mostly found in thrillers and dark romance.

  • Kuudereクーデレ

Cool and composed on the outside, quietly caring underneath; love shown through actions and rare smiles.

  • Dandereダンデレ

Shy and silent until they trust someone, then warm and talkative. Their arc is finding a voice.

Formats & neighbors

Not everything shelved next to manga is manga. These are the closest relatives and the terms people mix up most.

  • Manhwa만화

Korean comics, today mostly full-color, vertical-scroll series read on phones, read left to right.

  • Manhua漫画

Chinese comics, known for cultivation and martial-arts fantasy, now largely published as full-color webcomics.

  • Manga vs manhwa vs manhua

A side-by-side comparison of origin, reading direction, color, format and typical genres.

  • Webtoon

The vertical-scroll digital comic format that grew out of Korea and now spans every country.

  • Light novelライトノベル

Short Japanese prose novels with illustrations, and the source of many isekai manga and anime.

  • Reading order右から左

Manga reads right to left: top-right panel first, then across and down. How to read pages and balloons.

  • Mangaka漫画家

The manga artist: who writes and draws a series, how the job works, and how creators break in.

  • Doujinshi同人誌

Self-published manga, fan-made or original, sold at events like Comiket. A training ground for many pros.
