Common AI Manga Panel Mistakes (And How to Avoid Them)
The recurring mistakes that make AI manga panels look generic, cluttered, or off-model — and the specific fix for each one.
Most disappointing AI manga panels aren't the result of a bad tool — they're the result of a handful of repeatable mistakes in how the panel was set up. Once you can spot these, you can fix most of them before you even hit generate. Here's the list, in order of how often they actually show up.
Mistake 1: Vague prompts that produce generic results
"A ninja fighting in a forest" is not a prompt, it's a topic. The model will fill in every gap you didn't specify — and it will fill them in with the most statistically average version of "ninja" and "forest" it has. That's why vague prompts tend to produce panels that feel flat and interchangeable with a thousand other AI images.
Fix: specify the things that actually differentiate your scene. Camera angle, lighting direction, what the character is doing with their hands, what's in the foreground versus background, and the specific emotional beat of the panel. Compare:
> Vague: "A ninja fighting in a forest"
> Specific: "Low-angle shot, a lone ninja mid-leap between bamboo trees, katana drawn overhead, moonlight cutting through leaves behind them, ink-heavy shadows, intense focused expression"
The second version gives the model concrete decisions to make instead of average ones.
Mistake 2: Ignoring style presets and fighting the model manually
A common trap: pick no style preset (or the wrong one), then spend ten regenerations trying to manually describe your way into a particular art style — "make it more manga-like," "less painterly," "sharper lines" — when a style preset would have gotten there in one shot.
Fix: pick the closest style preset first (shonen, shojo, seinen, chibi, etc. — Gootaku's style guides cover the visual differences between these) and treat manual prompt additions as fine-tuning on top of that preset, not a replacement for it. You'll get more consistent results with far fewer regenerations.
Mistake 3: Cramming too much action into one panel
New AI manga creators frequently try to tell an entire scene in a single panel — three characters, a background explosion, two speech bubbles, and a dramatic camera angle, all at once. The model struggles to compose all of that coherently, and even when it technically succeeds, the panel reads as visually noisy and hard to follow.
Fix: manga storytelling is built on breaking a scene into a sequence of simpler panels, not compressing it into one complex panel. One clear action or beat per panel — the punch, then the reaction, then the aftermath — reads better and generates more reliably than trying to capture all three in a single image. Mistake 4: Forgetting screentone/ink instructions for an authentic manga look
A panel can have great composition and a correct character and still not read as manga, because it's missing the textural language of the medium — screentone shading, heavy ink linework, halftone dot patterns, high-contrast black and white or limited color. Without explicitly asking for these, many generations default to a smoother, more "generic digital illustration" look.
Fix: add explicit texture and finishing instructions to your prompt — "screentone shading," "heavy ink outlines," "halftone dots in shadow areas," "high contrast black and white." Mistake 5: Not specifying camera angle or framing
Left unspecified, most generations default to a fairly flat, centered, medium-shot composition — because that's the safest average guess. Manga's visual energy comes largely from varying the camera: extreme close-ups on eyes for emotional beats, low angles for power and threat, wide establishing shots for scale, Dutch angles for disorientation.
Fix: name the shot type explicitly in every prompt: "extreme close-up," "low angle," "bird's eye view," "over-the-shoulder," "wide establishing shot." This single addition does more to make panels feel dynamic and professionally composed than almost any other prompt change. Mistake 6: Expecting AI to render long in-panel dialogue text cleanly
This is the mistake that causes the most frustration because it looks like it should work and usually doesn't. Asking an image model to render a full sentence of dialogue legibly inside a speech bubble, in a specific font, at a specific size, spelled correctly — that's asking image generation to do something closer to typesetting, and current models are unreliable at exactly that. You'll often get garbled letters, misspellings, or text that trails off the bubble.
Fix: don't fight this one — work around it. None of these fixes require a different tool — they require treating the prompt as a set of deliberate decisions instead of a rough topic sentence. Specific action, specific camera angle, a chosen style preset instead of manual fighting, explicit texture instructions, one beat per panel, and text added after the art rather than inside it.
