Aspect ratio is one of those things manga creators feel before they can name it — a panel "looks right" or it doesn't. But when you're directing an AI manga maker instead of drawing freehand, you have to actually specify the shape, because the model won't guess your page layout for you. A traditional manga artist draws the panel border first, then composes the art to fit inside it — the ratio is decided at the layout stage and the art adapts. Tall vertical (9:16 or taller)

Used sparingly for dramatic effect — a character falling, a tall building, a moment stretched out for pacing. This ratio reads as intentional and cinematic precisely because it's rare; overusing it flattens the effect.

Common mistakes

Using the same ratio for every panel. A chapter where every panel is a square gets visually monotonous fast — readers register the rhythm even if they can't name why a page feels flat. Vary ratio the same way you'd vary panel count per page: intentionally, for pacing.

Fighting the canvas with the prompt. Asking for an ultra-wide cinematic composition inside a tall portrait canvas produces a fight the model usually loses — you'll get a portrait image that awkwardly tries to cram in wide-shot elements. If a panel genuinely needs to be wide, generate it wide rather than cropping a portrait afterward.

Forgetting mobile readers. If your manga will primarily be read on a phone (most webtoon-style manga is), extreme landscape panels lose detail at small size. Reserve them for moments that earn the screen-width tradeoff.
