Why Your Wobble GIF Looks Choppy, Torn, or Weird (And How to Fix It)

First, how the wobble is actually generated
Wobble Maker doesn't simulate cloth physics or bones. It divides your image into a 24×24 grid of tiles and displaces each tile along a sine wave, with the displacement amount for each tile scaled by how heavily you painted it (that's the "weight"). Two adjacent tiles animate independently — each one gets its own phase offset based on its grid position, so neighboring tiles move slightly out of sync with each other on purpose (that's what gives the wobble its organic, springy feel instead of looking like a single rigid block sliding around).
That independence is also exactly why things can go wrong. If two adjacent tiles are both painted at high weight and high amplitude, they can drift far enough apart in a single frame that the seam between them becomes visible — a thin gap or a doubled edge where the mesh literally pulls apart at the tile boundary. This isn't a bug, it's a direct consequence of the grid being a grid: there's no interpolation stitching tile edges together, just independent per-tile displacement.
With that in mind, here are the three most common causes of a bad export.

Cause 1: You painted too large or too broad an area
If you fill a huge, continuous region — like the whole head of hair, or a whole character's torso — every tile in that region gets a high weight, and every one of those tiles is displacing independently at nearly the same amplitude. Across a big area, the accumulated visual effect isn't "this region wobbles together," it's "dozens of tiles disagree with each other about where they should be," which reads as tearing or shattering rather than motion.
Fix: paint narrower, more targeted regions instead of broad fills. Think in terms of the specific moving part — a strand of hair, an ear tip, a ribbon tail — rather than the general area around it. A 2–3 tile-wide stroke along the actual line of motion holds together far better than a wide blob covering the same visual space. If you genuinely want a large area to move, lower the strength (see Cause 2) rather than keeping it painted at full weight and full amplitude.

Cause 2: Strong strength on a large painted area
Wobble Maker has three strength presets, and they're not just "a little more" vs "a little less" — they map to real pixel displacement amounts: soft is 5px, medium is 10px, strong is 18px, applied per-tile, per-frame, on your working canvas (which tops out at 480px). Strong is nearly 4x the displacement of soft.
On a small painted area — a single accessory, a pendant, one hair tip — an 18px swing per tile looks snappy and springy, which is exactly the point of the strong preset. On a large painted area, that same 18px swing is happening independently across many neighboring tiles at once, and the seams between them become visible precisely because the tiles are moving far enough apart, fast enough, that there's no way for the eye to read it as one continuous surface.
Fix: reserve Strong for small, focused elements — a swinging charm, ear tips, a bell. For anything covering a larger painted region (a full ponytail, a wide swath of hair, a big ribbon), use Medium or Soft. Medium's 10px swing is usually the sweet spot for "clearly alive but still holds together" on mid-sized regions, and Soft's 5px is close to unnoticeable individually but reads as a nice subtle sway across a big area.

Cause 3: Painting right up to a hard edge
If your brush strokes run right up against a hard boundary in the image — the edge of a face, the outline of a solid object, a sharp color transition — the tiles right at that boundary are getting displaced while the tiles just outside your paint are staying completely static. That sharp cutoff between "moving" and "not moving" is very easy for the eye to catch, and it tends to look like the art is peeling away from itself rather than gently swaying.
This is especially noticeable around faces: painting motion into hair that touches the jawline or cheek means the wobble visibly tugs at the face outline every frame, which looks unnatural even at soft strength.
Fix: leave a small buffer of unpainted space between your motion mask and any hard edge you don't want to distort. Stop your brush a few pixels short of the jawline, the outline of a solid prop, or any other sharp boundary. The unpainted buffer acts as a soft transition zone — it's not doing anything special mechanically, it just means the sharp edge itself never gets a displacement value, so it stays put while the interior motion happens without visibly dragging on it.

A less obvious cause: the source image itself
Even with well-targeted painting and a sensible strength, a source image can work against you. Wobble Maker resamples your source down to a maximum working dimension of 480px before painting or rendering — if your original art already has motion blur, heavy anti-aliasing, or very fine linework (thin single-pixel hair strands, delicate cross-hatching), that detail gets compressed into very few pixels at 480px. Displacing those already-soft or already-thin details by 10–18px per tile can smear them into something blurrier or messier than the source ever looked, simply because there wasn't much pixel information there to begin with.
Fix: if your source has fine linework or blur, drop to Soft strength regardless of how large or small the painted area is, and expect thin details (single-strand hairs, fine jewelry chains) to read a little softer in motion than they do standing still. Flat, clean line art with clear, thick outlines holds up far better under displacement than photo-realistic or heavily blurred source images — there's simply more solid pixel data per tile for the displacement to move without falling apart.

- Seeing gaps or doubled edges between chunks of the image? You painted too broad an area — narrow your strokes.
