What Makes a Good AI Anime Video Prompt (For When You're Ready)
Practical, tool-agnostic prompt-writing advice for AI anime video — camera language, motion description, and scene framing you can use now and later.
Writing a prompt for a still image and writing a prompt for a video clip are different skills. A still prompt describes a moment. A video prompt has to describe change over time — what moves, how it moves, where the camera goes, and how the scene begins versus how it ends.
This guide is tool-agnostic: the principles below apply to any AI anime video generator you use today, and they'll apply just as well to Gootaku's video maker once it launches (it's currently in development, not live yet — see our note at the end). Think of this as building the muscle now so you're ready the moment the format ships.

Start With What Actually Moves
The single most common mistake in video prompts is describing a static scene and expecting the model to invent motion on its own. Be explicit about what changes between the first frame and the last.
Weak: "A samurai standing in a bamboo forest, wind blowing."
Stronger: "A samurai standing in a bamboo forest; wind sweeps through the bamboo stalks, bending them left to right; the samurai's cloak billows in response; loose leaves drift across frame."
Notice the stronger version names three separate things that move (bamboo, cloak, leaves) and gives each one a direction. Video models respond much better to concrete, directional motion cues than to vague atmosphere words like "dynamic" or "epic."

Learn Basic Camera Language
Anime and film both rely on a small vocabulary of camera moves that AI video tools have generally learned to recognize because they appear constantly in training data (film, animation, and video captions). Using these terms precisely gives you more control than describing the shot in your own words.
Core camera terms worth knowing:
- Pan — camera rotates horizontally from a fixed point (left-to-right or right-to-left).
- Tilt — camera rotates vertically from a fixed point (up or down).
- Dolly / push-in — camera physically moves toward or away from the subject.
- Tracking shot — camera moves alongside a moving subject, keeping pace.
- Zoom — the lens changes focal length; the frame tightens or widens without the camera physically moving.
- Static / locked-off shot — camera does not move at all; only subjects within the frame move. This is often the most reliable option for AI video because it removes one entire axis of complexity.
- Low-angle / high-angle shot — camera positioned below or above the subject, looking up or down. Common in anime for power dynamics (low angle = imposing, high angle = vulnerable).
"Static low-angle shot of a mecha pilot looking up at their machine; camera holds steady as steam vents from the mecha's joints; pilot's hair moves slightly in the wind."
Notice the camera itself doesn't move here — only the steam and hair do. This is a deliberately easier request for a model than combining camera movement with subject movement, and it's a good starting pattern while you're learning what a given tool handles well.

Describe Motion With Direction, Speed, and Duration
Vague motion words ("moves," "shifts," "changes") give the model very little to work with. Specify:
- Direction — left to right, up and down, toward camera, away from camera, clockwise.
- Speed — slow drift, sudden snap, gradual build.
- What triggers it — wind, impact, the character's own action.
Stronger: "The character's sword ignites with a blue glow starting at the hilt and spreading to the tip over the first two seconds; the blade swings in a slow arc from low-right to high-left."
This level of specificity matters more in video than in still-image prompting because the model has to render a believable progression, not just a single frozen state.

Frame the Beginning and the End
Because most AI video clips are short (commonly 5-10 seconds across the industry, a limit driven by compute cost and consistency — see our companion piece on how AI anime video generation actually works for why), it helps to think of your prompt as describing a beginning state and an end state, with the model filling in the motion between them.
Template:
[Scene/setting] + [starting position of subject] + [motion/action across the clip] + [ending position or state] + [camera behavior] + [style]
Example:
"Rooftop at night, city lights below. Character starts crouched at the edge, sword sheathed. Character stands and draws the sword in one motion, blade catching moonlight. Ends in a ready stance facing the skyline. Camera holds static, low angle. Anime style, cel-shaded, high contrast lighting."
This structure gives the model a clear arc rather than an open-ended request, which tends to produce cleaner, more intentional-looking results.

Keep the Scene Simple
It's tempting to pack a video prompt with everything you want — multiple characters, complex background action, several camera moves, a dramatic reveal. Resist this. Every additional moving element is another thing that can look inconsistent or physically wrong, and every additional camera instruction stacks complexity on top of that.
Good practice: one primary subject, one clear motion, one camera behavior, one background element that reacts (wind, particles, light). If you need a more complex sequence, plan it as multiple short clips rather than one overloaded prompt — this also matches how most tools actually generate video, in short segments rather than long continuous takes.

Match Motion to Anime Conventions, Not Realism
Anime doesn't move like live-action footage, and prompts that ask for "realistic motion" often fight against the stylistic cues the model needs to produce anime-appropriate results. Anime conventions worth naming explicitly in your prompt:
- Speed lines for fast motion (a punch, a dash, a thrown object).
- Held poses / impact frames — a brief pause on a dramatic pose rather than continuous fluid motion, common in action beats.
- Exaggerated follow-through — hair, clothing, and scarves that move more dramatically than physics would strictly allow, for emphasis.
- Smear frames — deliberately blurred or stretched frames used for very fast movement, a classic anime technique.

A Reusable Checklist
Before finalizing a video prompt, check that you've specified:
- [ ] The primary subject and their starting position
- [ ] What moves (and what stays still) across the clip
- [ ] Direction and rough speed of that motion
- [ ] Camera behavior (static is a safe default)
- [ ] The ending state or pose
- [ ] Style anchor (anime, cel-shaded, specific genre look)
- [ ] Any anime-specific motion convention you want (speed lines, held pose, smear frame)
